Chapter Twelve

“When did they say they’d have the results?”

Luke checked the time on his phone. “An hour ago.”

“Goddammit.” I dropped my head back to the wall behind me and stared at the stark white ceiling tiles. We were seated in a cramped cordoned-off area of the emergency room with Matthew lying in a bed beside us as we waited for the results of his CT scan. So far all we knew was he had a concussion.

By the time I’d gotten him down to the first floor of the Harrison Estate, he had awoken and said he was okay. I could breathe a little easier at that, but I had continued on to my car just as quickly as I’d been moving with him before he came to.

When we’d gotten to the ER, the doctor had asked him several questions like his name and the date and what he could remember of what happened to him, and then she’d checked Matthew’s coordination and reflexes and ordered the scan to rule out anything serious since he’d lost consciousness.

“In about a minute,” I said, “I’m going out there to find the results myself.”

Luke nodded. “I hear ya.” He folded his arms across his chest again, just as he’d been sitting for the past hour.

Matthew turned his head our way and reached a hand out for me. “I’m okay. I feel fine now.”

I interlaced my fingers with his. “Are you sure?”

“Yeah. They just wanted to keep an eye on me for a little longer. The scan isn’t gonna show anything.”

Luke stood and went around to the other side of the bed. “You still sick to your stomach?”

Matthew sat up taller. “No. I’m all right now. I just want to go home.”

Luke remained standing beside the bed, the tension visible in the tight clench of his jaw and those arms back across his chest. He tipped his head to me. “I think that sounds good to the big guy too.” Then he let go of his rigid posture and brushed a lock of Matthew’s dark hair off his forehead. “And me too.”

I stroked the back of Matthew’s hand with my thumb. “I’m—”

“Stop.” His voice was full of exasperation.

I stopped, mostly because that was a new tone for him.

“Don’t say you’re sorry again. This wasn’t your fault.”

The hell it wasn’t.

“Richard.”

I met his gaze, and he said, “We’re going to find whatever it is they want, you’re going to keep the estate, and no one else is getting hurt in the process.”

That sounded just about perfect to me but… “Listen—”

“Don’t.” Luke shot me a look that would send a death row inmate running in fear.

“What?”

Before he could say another word, the curtain was drawn open, and the doctor from earlier entered. “Mr. Stewart, how are you feeling?”

“Fine.”

I stood, and Luke and I waited near the opening of the curtain to give the doctor room to work. She checked Matthew’s eyes and reflexes again. “You look good. The symptoms seem to have dissipated. I’d say you’re ready to go home.
